Ashtapadi Book

English/Malayalam

Gita Gōvindam / Ashtapadi / English

Gita Gōvindam / Ashtapadi is a Sringara Mahakāvya written by the 12th Century poet Jayadeva. Written in sonorous Sanskrit, the Mahakāvya has left behind an enduring imprint about the composer's imagination. Each padam has eight stanzas and each stanza have a unique meaning that resonates with the soul.

In his Gita Gōvinda, Jayadeva sings of sringara or love between the Jeevātma and Paramātma and its beauty, purity, and dynamic majesty. He has dived deep into the kingdom of love. Sri Krishna is the Paramātma and Rādha is the Jeevātma in Jayadeva's thoughts.
